Making North America cruelty free
We’re working to end animal testing for cosmetics in the United States and Canada
Cruelty Free International leads the largest global campaign to end animal tests for cosmetics and other consumer products. We are calling on the United States and Canada to modernize cosmetics regulations to end cruel animal tests. And we’re asking them to match international progress and consumer expectations for safe and cruelty free cosmetics.
Cruelty free campaign
Sadly, countless animals are subjected to cruel tests each year to bring a new shower gel or lipstick to U.S. and Canadian shelves. Yet humane, modern alternatives are available that are actually, cheaper, faster and more predictive for humans. Cruelty Free International is working hard so North America can be cruelty free.
Despite the challenges ahead, we have already seen positive progress and across North America we are applying our proven campaigning approach by:
- Lobbying politicians and governments to ban the use of animals in cosmetics testing
- Encouraging regulators to accept non-animal tests
- Mobilizing compassionate citizens through high profile campaigns
- Enlisting the support of Leaping Bunny certified cruelty free cosmetics companies
United States campaign
Cruelty Free International is calling on both Congress and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to bring an end to animal testing for cosmetics in the U.S.
Despite progress in humane product testing and bans on animal testing for cosmetics in other countries, the United States has no national law prohibiting the use of animals for cosmetics testing.
It is time for the United States to catch up with modern advancements, consumer expectation, and global progress to ensure that cosmetics are safe and humane.
Multiple opinion polls show that the American public overwhelmingly supports alternatives to testing cosmetics on animals. And a majority believes that testing cosmetics on animals is unethical.
Banning animal tests for cosmetics in the United States will also allow the American cosmetics industry to remain competitive in a global market that increasingly requires that only non-animal tests be used.
It's time to end cosmetics testing in the US!
We’re working hard to ensure that legislators and decision makers at the state and federal level understand all the arguments for ending cosmetics testing on animals in the United States. We have scientific, political, economic, ethical, and consumer interest arguments on our side.
It’s time for a cruelty free Canada
In Canada it is still legal for cruel animal tests to take place and for animal tested cosmetics to be sold on Canadian shelves. Despite progress in other countries, Canada is yet to introduce a ban on animal testing for cosmetics.
In 2013 we partnered with The Body Shop Canada as part of our global pledge campaign - the largest ever campaign to call for a ban on cosmetics testing worldwide. Our campaign achieved a million voices for a global end to cruel cosmetics.
Calling all compassionate Canadians!
We’ve teamed up with Elizabeth May MP to launch a petition to the House of Commons calling for an end to cosmetics testing on animals in Canada.
This unique petition can only be signed by Canadian citizens and is a brilliant way to make your voice heard. All you need to do is download the petition, print it out and find 25 people who’d like to sign it. Each petition needs just 25 signatures before it can be sent to your MP and read in the House of Commons!
Why not get a group of friends together and see who can gather the most signatures?!
Please let us know if you’re collecting signatures and we’ll do all we can to help. And don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
