Liberal Democrats vote to improve UK animal welfare
Motion to tighten animal testing regulation approved at Lib Dem Conference
A motion tabled by Liberal peers Baroness Cathy Bakewell and Baroness Parminter on Improving Animal Welfare urges the government to commit to ending experiments that cause extreme suffering to sentient animals and replacing them with humane alternatives. It also calls for Freedom of Information requests to be permitted to lift the shroud of secrecy that currently sits over the use of live animals in experiments.
We applaud the baronesses’ focus on ending cruel animal testing and efforts to put a stop to the severe suffering of animals in laboratories.
We will be closely watching other party conferences in the coming weeks to see what other initiatives are proposed on animal testing. Read our latest news pieces for updates.
Our Director of Public Affairs, Kerry Postlewhite, said: “I am delighted to see the Liberal Democrats’ commitment to reducing and replacing cruel and unnecessary animal testing. Thousands of animals suffer and die in experiments in the UK every year. The UK government too needs to respond to public demand and plot an end to this outdated practice.”
