Cruelty Free International scientists become Fellows of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics
Cruelty Free International Director of Science Dr Katy Taylor and Senior Research Scientist Dr Jarrod Bailey have both been appointed as Fellows of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. The distinction is awarded to those individuals who are making a significant contribution to the field of animal ethics.
The Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics is an independent think tank set up in 2006 to further forward-looking thinking about animals. It is committed to developing ethical ideas about animals through research, teaching, and publication.
Dr Katy Taylor said: “I am delighted to be appointed a new Fellow of the Centre. It is crucial that academics both from the fields of science as well as humanities work together to pioneer new vision for animal ethics. It is time to put the ethics of animal experiments back on the agenda and in particular question some of the mistaken assumptions about how animal research benefits humans.”
Dr Jarrod Bailey said: “It’s a real honour to be included in the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethic’s international Fellowship. It’s essential that we put animals on the intellectual agenda by fostering the academic research and teaching of animal ethics. I hope that together Cruelty Free International and the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics can continue the debate and make the world a better place for animals in laboratories.”
In 2015, the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics hosted a Summer School organised by Cruelty Free International to discuss animal ethics. During the event participants debated a report commissioned by Cruelty Free International called ‘Normalising the Unthinkable’ which was backed by more than 150 academics, intellectuals, and writers, including Nobel Laureate J. M. Coetzee.
