European Parliament committee backs call to end cruel cosmetics testing
Thanks to your amazing support, this week we’re one step closer to achieving a ban on cruel animal testing for cosmetics everywhere and forever.
We’ve been in Brussels to secure backing from the European Parliament’s Environment Committee for a resolution at the UN that would end cruel cosmetics once and for all.
In 2013, the EU banned the sale of cosmetics which have been tested on animals. However, 80% of the world would still allow such testing to take place.
That’s why we’ve teamed up with The Body Shop for our Forever Against Animal Testing campaign to finally ban cosmetics testing on animals everywhere. Join over 3.5 million people and sign the petition now.
As the pioneers of the first major cosmetics ban, securing the EU’s support for a global ban is a top priority. The Environment Committee also asked the European Commission to ensure the EU’s current ban on the sale of cosmetics tested on animals is fully enforced.
Julie Girling MEP, who co-signed the call said: “It’s hard to believe that a majority of countries still permit cosmetic testing on animals. The EU has been standard bearer on animal welfare and has strict rules prohibiting animal testing – we now want to see this atrocious practice ended globally. Today’s vote is a clear message from the European Parliament to the UN that more needs to be done to encourage the banning of animal testing worldwide.”
The full European Parliament will vote on a resolution in March next year telling European civil servants and governments to show global leadership and work to end cosmetics animal testing worldwide through the United Nations.
