We congratulate Illinois for taking another step towards being Cruelty Free
n March, the Illinois Cruelty Free Cosmetics bill (SB 241) passed the full Senate with a landslide vote of 53-0. We are happy to report that this week it passed its Assembly Committee with vote of 26-0! The bill now heads to the full Assembly for consideration. If it passes the Assembly, it is then sent to the Governor who gets the final say on whether or not it’s signed into law.
The bill, introduced by Senator Linda Holmes, aims to end the sale of cosmetics tested on animals in the state after 2020. This would bring Illinois in line with California and over 30 other countries around the world in stopping the sale of animal-tested cosmetics.
Monica Engebretson, the North America Campaign Manager for Cruelty Free International said: “The overwhelming support for SB 241 thus far is really promising, not only for Illinois but for the entire US. History has shown that state activity leads to changes at the federal level. Our state efforts have served as a catalyst to bring stakeholders to the table and will help inform a way forward for federal legislation.”
