Over the past 30 years, significant progress has been made in developing non-animal methods to meet legal testing requirements across multiple sectors. Many animal tests can now be wholly or partly replaced.
Yet in practice, change has been far too slow. Animals are still being used in tests for which non-animal methods are available. This is unacceptable.
To highlight this failure, we created the Replace Animal Tests (RAT) List, identifying ten legally required tests that continue to use animals despite reliable non-animal alternatives. We are working globally to end these tests – and the Replace Act would help do so in the United States.
Let’s make a difference for animals, together
Many people assume that once a humane alternative exists, animal testing naturally declines. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always. In some areas it continues unchanged – and in some cases, it even increases. The Replace Animal Tests (Replace) Act [H.R. 6660] would finally bring federal safety and efficacy testing into the 21st century. The bill takes a straightforward, common-sense approach: when a modern, scientifically valid non-animal method exists, it must be used.
