Why undercover investigations are necessary

Animal experiments, and their regulation, are shrouded in secrecy. In our view undercover investigations have been the only reliable way to obtain comprehensive and accurate information about animal experiments in the UK (and in many other countries) and play a critical role in shining the spotlight on a matter of public interest.

In our experience, it is often entirely up to animal researchers to decide which information they disclose which means that they can prevent access to information about what is done to animals in laboratories and for what reason. That is the very information in which the public is most interested. Animal researchers can, in effect, have a veto over the information that governments can disclose to the public and elected officials.

Researchers do sometimes voluntarily put information into the public domain, however, our experience in the UK has been that such summaries may not be full or reliable, characterised more as an exercise in public relations than a genuine attempt to inform the public.
